What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are extremely thin layers that are applied to the tooth with bonding cement to improve the look and appearance of your tooth. Most dental veneers are made with porcelain or ceramic.
Dental veneers are used to correct the following:
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Discoloration or uneven coloring
- Gaps in your smile
- Small teeth
- Pointed, unusually shaped teeth
- Worn teeth
- Teeth that are misaligned or uneven
Your teeth can affect your entire appearance. Dental veneers are not just a one-size-fits-all procedure. Dr. Elder will take into account various factors before applying a dental veneer which will include the coloration of the surrounding teeth, your facial structure, your ancestry, any underlying structural issues, and more.
Many people request dental veneers that are bright white, or perfectly straight and this results in a “Chiclet” look. Imperfection equals perfection, and a smile that is too fake stands out. Dr. Elder will create a custom look that matches your face and improves your look without making it obvious that you have veneers.
If you are nervous about making this change, you will receive a trial smile while your veneers are being molded, so you can see just how the veneers will look.
Am I A Candidate For Dental Veneers?
Not all of our patients are good candidates for dental veneers. If you have teeth that are decaying, loose, or need extensive work such as fillings or root canals, you will not be a candidate to receive dental veneers.
This is why it’s so important to first consult with Dr. Elder who will examine your teeth, take X-rays, and determine your eligibility.
It might be necessary for you to restore your mouth to optimal health before having dental veneers applied. Our team at SL Dental will work hard to help you become eligible for veneers. You may need orthodontic services first and we can provide Invisalign retainers or refer you to one of our trusted specialists.
One important aspect of your oral care that may prevent you from receiving dental veneers is gum disease. Dr. Elder will thoroughly clean your teeth beneath the gums and provide coaching on good oral hygiene to help restore your gum health. Once your gums are healthy, you can proceed with dental veneers providing there are no other issues.
How Much Do Dental Veneers Cost?
When you schedule your consultation, we will provide you with an estimate once we analyze your smile. The cost of dental veneers varies because each patient is so unique. You may require more than one veneer, extensive grinding, or may need anesthesia. Each of these variables will have an impact on the final cost of your veneers.
How Do You Apply Dental Veneers?
Applying traditional dental veneers requires more than one appointment. Most dental veneers can be completed with three appointments:
- Initial consultation
- Fitting and temporary veneer
- Final application
During your consultation, Dr. Elder will clean your teeth and take X-rays. You will receive guidance and an estimate of cost.
If you decide to move forward, your second appointment will include grinding down the tooth, taking a mold, and applying a temporary veneer.
We send your mold to a lab and will call you to schedule your final appointment when they are ready.
At your final appointment, we will etch your tooth’s surface to prep it so it will adhere to the bonding cement and the veneer. We will carefully clean your tooth so no bacteria remains which could decay your tooth. Then we will apply the bonding cement and the veneer. Ultraviolet light will be applied to harden the cement immediately. Finally, we clean your teeth and remove any excess cement.
What About Aftercare? How Do I Take Care Of My Dental Veneers?
After your dental veneers are applied, you won’t need to wait to eat or drink. Your gums may feel sore, but you may take ibuprofen and apply ice to the area to alleviate any pain.
To care for your dental veneers, continue to practice good oral hygiene which includes brushing and flossing your teeth.
Don’t chew on hard objects such as ice or your fingernails and don’t open packages with your teeth. If you are prone to grinding your teeth at night or you play sports, invest in a mouthguard to wear at night or while playing.
How Long Do Dental Veneers Last?
So long as you take care of your veneers and don’t chip or break them, your veneers can last a decade. Traditional veneers last from 10-15 years while our no-prep veneers like LumineersⓇ last 5-7 years.
